THE HEART OF THE CENTER

The Champlain Senior Center has existed for over 40 years in various locations. In 1999 the Champlain Senior Center, along with the Burlington’s Children’s Space, moved in to the newly built McClure Multigenerational Center. Since then Outright Vermont and the Vermont Immigration and Asylum Advocates have made the McClure building their home. Collectively we are a true Multigenerational Center and as such our participants have the benefit of the vitality and richness that comes from being a part of a larger community.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Champlain Senior Center is to support the independence and well-being of senior adults, enhance their dignity and self-respect, and promote their participation in all aspects of community life.

Repeated studies show that over 90% of seniors wish to remain in their homes and one in five older adults are suffering from depression, anxiety, or substance abuse (NCOA, 2011). Our goal is to assist seniors in maintaining their independence so they can remain in their own homes and be healthy, vital, and active adults who have a sense of purpose and self-worth. We do that through providing a variety of engaging programs, a noon meal, and the opportunity to converse and keep good company with others.

We recognize that seniors cover a large age span with a variety of needs and interests. To meet those needs the Champlain Senior Center offers a spectrum of programming and actively encourages feedback from seniors and participation in the planning process.

Repeated studies have shown that healthy interaction with others is a key in successful aging so we invite you to come by and participate in a program, partake in a meal, have a cup of coffee, enjoy a visit with the children across the hall, stretch those muscles, create art, sing along with Scott or Jim as they play tunes on the piano, or just share a chuckle or two about this world we all live in. We know you will be glad you did!

DIVERSITY STATEMENT

The Champlain Senior Center welcomes and embraces individual differences as it is representative of our lives, our families and friends, our neighborhood, greater community, and the world. We believe that a diverse group of people vitalizes, enriches and strengthens our Center.

The Champlain Senior Center believes that a Senior Center should strive to provide access to all seniors without regard to their background or circumstances, including those of race, color, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national and ethnic origin, socioeconomic status, cultural and/or geographical background, religious belief, age, or disability.
